Tongue Function Assessments
-
Undertaken as part of a breastfeeding or bottle-feeding assessment when appropriate.
-
Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is when a baby’s tongue doesn’t move as freely as it should. This happens because the tissue under the tongue (the frenulum) is tight or restricting.
-
Clinical experience suggests tongue-tie may contribute to some of the following:
-
Pain and damage to the mother’s nipples during breastfeeding
-
Less effective milk transfer from baby to breast
-
Bottle-feeding challenges
-
Weight gain issues
-
Reflux and excessive gassiness
-
-
Research shows that when there is a restriction in tongue movement and therefore tongue function, feeding, eating, speaking and breathing can be impacted.
-
The underlying cause of you and your baby's symptoms can sometimes be missed if an assessment of a tongue-tie by appearance alone is conducted and you may receive conflicting information around feeding your baby.
-
We will assess your baby's feeding and tongue function using comprehensive and objective assessment tools after which we can further advise on next steps.
-
If you're concerned about your baby's feeds, get in touch, we're here to support you!
