Postnatal & Breastfeeding Support

Helping you to feel confident after birth

MW, Lactation consultation

“Whether you are a first-time or an experienced mom, every breastfeeding journey is different. With my two eldest, I had oversupply and engorgement. This time with my third was the same. I contacted Michelle for help, and she immediately gave me advice. She always answered my questions with very detailed explanations and reassured me that everything would be ok! The day she came to see me, she did her magic. I can’t thank her enough. Ever since, I’m more confident and both my newborn and I are happy breastfeeding. I highly recommend Michelle for your lactation consult and more!"

Tongue Function Assessments

  • Undertaken as part of a breastfeeding or bottle-feeding assessment when appropriate.

  • Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is when a baby’s tongue doesn’t move as freely as it should. This happens because the tissue under the tongue (the frenulum) is tight or restricting.

  • Clinical experience suggests tongue-tie may contribute to some of the following:

    • Pain and damage to the mother’s nipples during breastfeeding

    • Less effective milk transfer from baby to breast

    • Bottle-feeding challenges

    • Weight gain issues

    • Reflux and excessive gassiness

  • Research shows that when there is a restriction in tongue movement and therefore tongue function, feeding, eating, speaking and breathing can be impacted.

  • The underlying cause of you and your baby's symptoms can sometimes be missed if  an assessment of a tongue-tie by appearance alone is conducted and you may receive conflicting information around feeding your baby.

  • We will assess your baby's feeding and tongue function using comprehensive and objective assessment tools after which we can further advise on next steps.

  • If you're concerned about your baby's feeds, get in touch, we're here to support you!
